Coaching Search Just Got Complicated

Bad news for the Steelers -- the Atlanta Falcons have fired head coach Jim Mora Jr.

Atlanta owner Arthur Blank, one of the co-founder's of Home Depot, will no doubt be most aggressive in getting the coach he wants (i.e. will outbid other team's who are suitors for the coach he wants). Additionally, Steelers Offensive Coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was born in Atlanta, is a graduate of Georgia Tech, and played for the Falcons from 1985-1988.

Of course the significance of this turn of events depends upon whether or not the Steelers have an interest in elevating Mr. Whisenhunt to their head coaching position -- and the feeling here is that as good as he is as an Offensive Coordinator he is not someone worth overpaying (after all, San Diego Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron is still out there, and given his Marty Schottenheimer "roots" one would have to believe that his philosophy of coaching is at least similar to Bill Cowher's).

In other head coaching news Arizona fired Dennis Green today, and the only way that will make a difference to the Steelers is if they actually have an interest in USC head coach Pete Carroll.

Finally, in reviewing the list of external candidates that was compiled here, based on some team peformances late in the season a couple of names can probably be removed from consideration -- namely Cincinnati's Defensive Coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and Dallas Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer.
